The Maoris had no drums or other instruments but kept time by foot stamping and slapping the chest and thighs with the hands. The poi, or small ball attached to a piece of string, twirled and beaten back with the left hand over the shoulder or against various parts of the body is probably one of the most graceful dances evolved to accompany the appropriate song and illustrate the words.」「These songs of nature telling their story in this programme generally form part of the entertainment offered on ceremonial occasions when group singing is more usual than solo singing.
