This long obstructed the movement of people, leading to the early development of rafts and small river craft as a means of transportation. One such swift river is the Mogami River, which flows northwards from a point in the northeastern prefecture of Yamagata to its outlet in the Sea of Japan. From ancient times boats have been the means of transportation here and the water of the river has been beneficially used for agricultural purposes.
