One canoe was called Takutimu and it had special significance, for it carried the tribal gods and the sacred earth of the original homeland, Hawaiiki. Takitimu ended its journey in the South Island but it had stopped at many bays in its travels around the New Zealand coast and there are many tribes in the North Island that trace their origins to members of its crew. / This poi chant describes the journeys of Takitimu from Hawaiiki and around the New Zealand coast and it also includes some of the ancient prayers used by the priest to preserve the vessel and its crew during the hazards of the long journey. / The chant is accompanied by the twirling of pois – balls made of rush leaves, about the size of a tennis ball and swung rhythmically on the end of a chord. The poi dance is graceful, rhythmical and of great beauty. As the performers sing the poi is struck against the hand and body, providing a rhythm for the music.」と記載。
