The folksong lives with the community and, in the course of the centuries, it has undergone changes; it can be shown that when the needs of community change, the folksong changes as well.」「But surprisingly enough, research in the folksong field has only been going on in Germany since the end of the last century. It was only in 1914 that the German Folksong Archives were founded in Freiburg, followed three years later by the Archives of German Folksongs in Berlin. As to the question of what constitutes a folksong, the following definition is generally accepted: there are in principle no distinguishing characteristics between folklore and literature, relative to content and form, valid for all periods and all peoples. The single specific objective characteristic of folklore, which clearly distinguishes it from literature and which can be found in the folklore of all peoples, is variability -- creative changeableness or modification. This one expression, a result of oral tradition, lives in virtually all folklore.」「The lovely city of Regensburg on the Danube - the longest river in Europe - with its famous stone bridge, is the setting for the next folksong, which will once again be presented by Roswitha Scheer. In this song, known throughout Germany, we get some idea of how things develop with the lyrics of folksongs. Because, in fact, Regensburg itself as a city has little real bearing on the song: what's more important is the fact that a ferryman plies his trade between the two sides of the river. The song is based on the concept of the purity of the water. Virgins are the only girls protected from being drowned in the river's whirling depths. And so the people sing of the noble Lady Kunigund, who was doomed to die in the maelstrom.
