The lyrics and melody of that German folksong were first set down 150 years ago, though the song itself is much older and would certainly be amongst those included in any list of favourite German folksongs. Folksongs were meant as entertainment; they were sung within the community and told a story, often a love story. They also told about people's lives, about their work, about heroes and legendary figures, as well as about mysteries and dangers. And so they were passed on from one generation to the next, often in an ever-changing form.」「The "little fountain" song which we just heard, tells something about the era when the song came into being -- when people's lives were organised strictly according to social position, to whose rules everyone was subject. The young man in the song could not reveal the name of the maiden who was the object of his affections, most probably because his social position was higher than hers. He could not call out to her, but only signal to her -- as the song says -- with nothing but his eyes.」「In this song, the mystery of love is associated with the flowing water. Not only can the elemental force of life be found in water; the truth can also be found there, as poets have sung from time immemorial.」「Water is the wellspring of life, symbolising life, death and immortality.
