The song has a nonsense refrain, which is left out in this translation.」「Two girls were out planting cabbage./ They talked so much about marriage.」「Two sailors went past and heard them./ "Tonight we'll go to the girls".」「But the door was closed with sticks and straw,/ so not a sailor could come through them.」「That night a northerly wind blew,/ and the door blew open and the sailors went in.」「They pulled out chairs and asked them to sit down,/ they offered them beds to rest in.」「But I don't know what the girls got,/ but the beds creaked and the covers fell.」「And when they had stayed until late in the day,/ "My goodness, my goodness, we've got to get aboard".」「So off they walked down main street/ and met their master, the captain.」「"Where have you been all night long?"/ "We've been to see some girls".」「"So you've been to see girls, well, then/ we'll teach you a thing or two".」「So they were lined up/ and the whip lashed them good.」「Soon their lashes will be healed,/ But the girls will never get their virginity back again.」「Hilda Ingberg was 70 when she was recorded. She had a big repertory of joking songs. When she was recorded, she was very busy baking, but she sang the whole time while she worked.
