These decisions are taken on the basis of a number of ways which must be the remnants - at least a number of them - of ancient systems of determining people's fate and of legal customs. One custom, known to be at least 2-thousand years old, concerns the way heathens used to consult the gods. A branch was cut of a fruiting tree, such as a beech or an oak tree. The branch was divided into small pieces each distinguished by various characteristics. By casting these bits of branch at random, the answer of the gods was obtained.」「Early this century, boys in Holland and in other countries in Western Europe were still using a flat bit of timber which had a different mark or colour on each side.」「The bit of timber was tossed in the air in order to decide who was to start the game. The same purpose was served by tossing a coin, heads or tails or to use the Dutch equivalent: cross or coin; by the way, Dutch coins have not shown a cross on the one side for quite some time.」「If the boys did not possess a coin - and we are going back some 50 years now - they used a cap for the purpose: one of them threw his cap in the air and the way it landed indicated which of the two players had the first choice in selecting the team-mates for two equal teams. Sometimes the cap was not tossed up, but held by each of the players with one hand.
