Kao Asobi no Uta (Face-Drawing Song)」「Japanese children love to write letters or draw pictures with a piece of pagodite, which they call roseki (wax stone), on a stone or concrete pavement whenever they find a safe and appropriate space. Since paper was rather expensive in Japan before World War II, the children used pavements instead of drawing paper. Pavements are not only free to use but the children can wipe away what they have just drawn on them and can draw new pictures again and again. They can also draw quite a large picture - of a house, for example, - into which they can step and play some games.」「In one of these picture drawing games, the children try to draw a comical face, adding its features one by one while singing a song. The idea is that by spontaneously adding together mountains, rivers and whatever they think of on the spur of the moment, they can somehow with one finishing touch make them all into a face. Because of its amusing process and unexpected result, this kind of game is still popular today, but children in the past could often be heard singing such a song as you hear in the present recording while crawling on hands and knees and drawing on the pavement. This kind of game accompanied by a song does not seem to be found in any other country in the world.」「Singing in the present recording are primary school children in Iwate Prefecture at the northeastern end of Honshu.
