They have to find places where the ground is dry and hard; so they try to think of games which they can enjoy in such places. Since it is very cold in the first place, the children have to move their bodies in some way or other to warm themselves up. The kind of games they can play on such occasions should not require a very large space. That is why nawa-tobi or skipping with a rope has long been popular.」「Two children stand facing each other holding a seven- or eight-meter-long rope between them, and they swing it simultaneously in the same direction so that the rope will form a revolving arc. The other children then come into the arc one by one, skipping lightly and skillfully so that their feet won't be trapped by the rope. Instead of just counting the numbers they sing a song, in which numbers are not merely arranged one after another but cleverly associated with the details of some kind of story. This kind of song is known as a nawa-tobi uta (a skipping-rope song).」「The song in this recording is sung by primary school children in a farming village in the rice cultivating area of Miyagi Prefecture in the northeastern end of Honshu.」「This counting song comprises the enumeration of the names of living things which are cleverly associated with the numbers. As indicated by the title, "Ichi-wa no Karasu"(One Crow), the words of this song go something like this: "One crow cawed. Two roosters cried cock-a-doodle-doo. Three fish swam. The fourth (shi) is a white-haired (shiraga no) old man. Now, the first child go out of the rope. Next, the second one. Then, the third. Now, the fourth. Next, the fifth. Then, the sixth, the seventh, the eighth, the ninth. All the ten children have now gone out of the rope."」「Nawa-tobi is still a very popular winter game enjoyed by children throughout Japan.」と記載。
