A particularly popular game played indoors on such occasions is te-asobi, which means "playing with the hands". To play te-asobi two children sit facing each other, and show the palms of their hands to each other. When I asked a dyer in what design I should have it dyed, he answered - The best design would be tachibana (a mandarine orange), the second an iris, the third the wisteria which blooms in clusters, the fourth a lion and peonies, the fifth a mountain covered with cherry blossoms blooming thickly, the sixth a purple balloon flower, the seventh a nandin (sacred bamboo), the eighth a Japanese rose, the ninth small plum blossoms scattered everywhere, and the tenth a feudal lord's family crest. Then, give the dyed cloth to the boatman who lives at the back of your house, and he may surely use it for souvenirs when he sails in his sailboat up to Tokyo, which is the nation's capital." The encouraging shouts which sound like "enyaraya" are those of a boatman's song.」「This kind of game is popular in Aichi Prefecture even today, and is played widely when the winter season begins; the people there seem to be still very fond of the words of this song.」と記載。
