It was widely believed by the Japanese in the past that a fire or a star which had fallen from the sky was broken into tiny little pieces of light to live on the earth as hotaru．」「The larvae of these insects live in rivers and marshlands, and when fully grown the fireflies fly about on summer evenings. Flying against the dark sky, their pale blue lights flickering, they certainly present a very romantic sight. Fireflies are already mentioned in Japanese literature written around the seventh century; their mysterious light has often been compared to human spirits or to the romantic love between a man and a woman．」「The areas around the rivers and marshlands where many fireflies live，therefore，have been set aside as scenic spots and resorts, where the picturesque game of hotaru-gari (firefly catching) has been observed since ancient times. On summer evenings people of a romantic turn of mind would gather in these areas, each carrying a small cage as they went out hoping to find a cool breeze and to catch with their fans a few of these lovely insect. They would put them in the cage and bring them home to admire their mysterious flickering light. This became a popular game also among children，singing a song such as has been recorded in this program in their effort to lure them closer so that they might catch them.」「This recording was made by primary school children in Araki Village in Mamurogawa Town in Mogami County, Yamagata Prefecture in northern Honshu．The area is surrounded by mountains which rise some 1,000 meters above sea level.
