雑資料「JAPANESE NURSERY & CHILDREN'S SONGS」一頁に「B. SONGS SUNG OF HEAVENLY BODIES AND METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA」「1. Ue Mireba (When We Look up) 1'00"」、十六頁に「1. Ue Mireba (When We Look up)」「Since Japan is an archipelago stretching over a considerable distance from north to south, in some parts it seldom snows while in other parts people spend half of the year surrounded by deep snow. There are places where it reaches a depth of four meters or so. In Snowy districts, therefore, people start preparing for the long, dreary winter as soon as November sets in.」「Although snow is thus a menace for the people who live in such areas, the Japanese customarily welcome heavy snow, which, they believe, will bring bumper crops. There is no valid scientific basis for the causal relation between snowfall and a good harvest, but since olden times it has been said that when there is heavy snow, the harmful insects in the paddy fields will die and the rice plants will be saved from damage by them.」「Because of such expectations, the children in the farming villages look up at the winter sky and pray to the god of weather, who, they believe, rules the sky, to let the snow come. And the moment the first flakes begin to fall they go out of their houses, jumping about in their neighborhood to express their joy. "Ue Mireba" is the song they sing on such occasions.」「The song recorded in this program was sung by primary school children in Akita Prefecture, which lies in the northernmost part of Honshu, facing the Japan Sea, and is known for its particularly heavy snow. Snow falls so deep in this area that people often have to use upstair windows to go in and out of their houses.」「The words of the song go something like this: "When we look up, can see snow falling from the sky just like so many winged insects. When we look through the air at the snow it looks as fluffy as cotton flakes, and on the ground cold snow is beginning to lie thick."」「Since Akita Prefecture is one of the largest rice growing areas in Japan, this custom is still seen today.」と記載。
