Sansai (Sansai Song）」「During the Bon festival, observed annually for three days beginning July 13th with the aim of consoling the spirits of our ancestors, a ceremony used to be held in many Japanese villages. In this ceremony, which goes back centuries, children below the age of twelve or thirteen paraded through the streets, each carrying a round fan in their hands.」「It seems to have started as a ritual similar to the Mushi Okuri (Driving-off Harmful Insects). In order to drive out evil spirits which had accompanied the ancestral spirits returning to their old homes during the time of Bon and which would cause harm to human society, children would parade through their village shouting loudly all the way．The custom of using children for this purpose seems have begun already early in this seventeenth century. The song which these children sang when they paraded in procession was called the "Bon-uta" (Bon festival song), and the melody was taken from songs popular in each district.」「The song recorded in this program was sung by school children in Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture - a small castle town in the northern central part of Honshu facing the Japan Sea. The title of this song is "Sansai".」「The words of the song go something like this: "Shall we dance? Or shall we go instead to see the lovely wife of the man named Tokubei on the island? Isn't she a beautiful! She becomes prettier each time we come to see her." The word, Sansai, is taken from the encouraging shout given at certain points in this song, and has，therefore，no particular meaning.」「This particular type of custom, once observed during the Bon festival, has now been almost completely abandoned.」と記載。
