Mushi Okuri (Driving-of Harmful Insects)」「From late spring toward summer Japan is in the hot and humid season known as tsuyu, and damage to crops by harmful insects begins to appear. It has become customary in farming villages therefore to build large straw men, or to parade through the village holding these dolls, each carrying a basket in its hand filled with harmful insects. When the people finally come to the end of their village, they set the straw men to float on the river, or throw them out of the village bounds.」「In ancient times, Japanese farmers thought that harmful insects were operated by evil spirits who played wicked tricks on human society; and so people tried to persuade these spirits not to appear in their locality and at the same time they tried to make as much noise as they could by beating percussion instruments so as to drive the evil spirits, as well as harmful insects, out of their village. "Mushi Okuri" is the song sung while the farmers paraded through their village in the ceremony of driving out harmful insects.」「The present recording was made by villagers in Okayama Prefecture in the southern part of western Honshu and facing the Seto Inland Sea. The place is known for its mild climate and abundant rice crops. Cotton has also been cultivated widely in this area since the seventeenth century, and the place used to be the nation's major cotton producing center．」「The words of this song roughly mean: "You insects who destroy rice and cotton, pass along through this village and pass away to somewhere else."」「With the enormous development of agricultural chemicals in recent years, however, the number of harmful insects has decreased so drastically as to have brought to an end the kind of ceremony like the Mushi Okuri.」と記載。
