Sagicho no Uta (Sagicho Song) 38"」、十頁に「4．Sagicho no Uta (Sagicho Song)」「It has long been customary in Japan that either on the night of the 14th or on the morning of the 15th of January every year people gather the pine decorations set up to welcome the Toshigami-sama (the God of the New Year) [See A-1：Shogatsu-san], together with the wooden tablets and paper charms brought from Shinto Shrines, which have protected the family for the past year, and various other decorations offered to the gods, and pile them up high on a river bank or in an open space to burn them. The children run cheerfully around the fire and poke it with sticks. Later, over the fire，they toast mochi (rice cakes), which have been offered to Toshigami-sama, and eat them together hoping that the feast will give them protection from colds throughout the new year. This colorful custom of making a bonfire is known as "Sagicho" or "Dondo-yaki".」「In the medieval ages, members of the imperial clan and the nobility played a ball game in which they hit a ball with special stick. During the New Year holidays, they would gather and make a pile of all their old sticks to burn them. During the ritual an expert in the science of divination would take three of the old sticks to build a tripod on which they put a pot; some special food was cooked in it as an offering to the gods, after which all those present at the」、十一頁に「ceremony would eat some of it. Sagicho is the corrupt form of a word meaning three sticks; the Chinese characters today used for the word Sagicho were simply added later.
