Nanakuaa no Uta (Song of the Seven Herbs of Spring）」「On the morning of January 7th, the Japanese used to eat a kind of rice porridge cooked with seven herbs of spring. This has become an established custom through many centuries of Observance. The seven herbs here are seri (Japanese parsley), nazuna (shepherd's purse), gogyo (mugwort), hakobe (chickweed), hotokenoza (bee nettle), SuZuna (turnip) and Suzushiro (garden radish). It has been widely believed that if the people eat this special rice porridge cooked with the seven herbs of spring on January 7th, they will not suffer from illness throughout the coming year.」「The master of the family is supposed to cook this porridge himself, and as he cuts up the herbs, the song he sings rhythmically in time with the chopping sound he makes with his knife on the kitchen chopping board is the "Song of Nanakusa". 」「The song recorded in this program was sung by an old man in Inno-shima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Inno-shima is a tiny island with a population of only 40,000 or so situated in the southern part of the Seto Inland Sea to the west of Japan's mainland, Honshu. 」「The words of this song go something like this: "Let's cook the nanakusa porridge at the beginning of the new year, and before the arrival of the evil birds which will bring us disasters and the harmful birds which devastate the rice ears on our farm. Let's get together and drive them out by cheerfully chopping with a knife the seven herbs of spring on the board."」「There is documentary evidence that this custom had already been introduced from the Chinese Continent by the eighth century, and observed by the members of the imperial clans and the nobility.
