In the past，People believed that Toshigami-sama (the God of the New Year) disguised as a white-haired old man would bring the new year with him as he came down from the mountains to their village. 」「To welcome the god，People used to set up, on both sides of their front gates, bunches of pine branches so that the God of the New Year might easily find his way. They also offered rice, mochi (rice cakes), dried kaki (persimmons), konbu (a kind of seaweed), dried cuttlefish and shrimps and other delicacies on temporary altars in their family shines.」「As the end of December approached, therefore, the children would sing songs they called "Shogatsu-san" or "Shogatsu-sama" in their wish for the God of the New Year to come down to their village soon.
