- 曲目解説に「In January it's cold. Most of the landscape is covered with snow. The people are bundled in thick overcoats and woolen scarves. The nights are long. It gets dark early, while people are still at work, about 5 o'clock in the afternoon.」「Outside, in the city and country, the winter may just be starting to decorate the land with snow and the houses with icicles. Nevertheless, January is a month of hope and gladness. Therefore carnival has the saying.」「The carnival season starts in November and ends on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Even in the old traditions, in which Christian and nature-worship concepts are combined, a broad stream of swelling hope flows from November, with its thoughts of death, through December, with its Advent and Christmas lights, to January and then to March and April that introduce spring, the most beloved of all seasons.」「January is the month of festivals, of balls and pleasures. The people dance and celebrate, they sow their wild oats before the ascetic austerity of Lent. January calls to the desires of the senses.」「1)Volksw. aus Köln」「"Spottlied auf die Kölner Funken"[下線付]」「Kölner Kinderchor, Ltg. H.G. In folksong we hear the essence of wishes and hopes. Longing reaches toward brightness and light. And that is still the case in West-Germany, even when it seems as if neon and steel have hidden the most elementary relationships with nature and the universe. For a picture of grouchy Germans who are too hardworking to laugh is a distortion that does not exist even in wet, cold January.」「We have begun the year gaily and full of humor; and that's proper for January. The Cologne Children's Choir, conducted by Hans-Günter Lenders, just sang a satirical song in the Cologne dialect. Satire and humor turn a full circle here. For what the song is mocking are the Cologne "sparks", city soldiers who once guarded the gates of the old protecting walls around the city that no longer exist. They're Carnival soldiers, who themselves are mocking and scoffing at militarism.」「The Carnival is a box of laughs that mirror life. The Cologne soldiers are a caricature of those Cologne city soldiers who were not invented by heroism. The caricature is the Cologner's way of accepting the defeat of the city by the Prussians who then occupied it. And that's why even today, the foolish Carnival soldiers were Prussian uniforms.」「When the parade of the masqueraders in southern Germany and the Rose-Monday parade of the Rhineland melt away, when the jesters hang up their caps until the next year, then spring is here, then nature is once more pulsing with the light and life that everybody has been waiting for.」と記載(「[第二パラグラフのcarnivalに]赤色囲い」「[第三パラグラフのcarnivalに]赤色下線」の書き込みあり)。
