The legend of Gench Osman is as follows: "Osman the Young (Gench Osman) was a 16 or 17 years old reckless young man, who wanted to take part in an expedition to relieve Baghdad from the Safevids during the time of Sultan Murat IV. It was decided that nobody without a beard or a moustache long enough to hold a comb should be allowed to join the expeditionary army. Osman the Young had a special comb made with very close teeth so that it would stay in his moustache. In this way he proved that he was old enough to join the army.
