Although its origin is obscure, it may well have derived from Spanish dances; to these the Peruvian people have brought certain modifications which stem from their own temperament and racial characteristics. The light and regular movements of this dance seem to resemble the rocking motion of a small boat on the sea - hence the title 'Marinera'.」「 The dance is performed by couples, each person carrying a gaily coloured handkerchief in the right hand.
