It is a salute to Paikea who is said to have journeyed to the new land of Aotearoa on the back of a whale which he had summoned up from the ocean by his magic incantations. The legend also records that when the seed of the kumara or sweet potato was lost during the journey from Hawaiiki, Paikea returned on the back of his whale, collected a further supply of kumara seed and flew to the new land carried by a great sea bird – the Albatross.」と記載。
