The fact that each passing age has added something new to the songs and rhymes of old whilst, at the same time, effecting here and there its own transformation is the really historic aspect of the children's song. In the life of the child the good old traditional chilren's song will therefore always retain its rightful place.」「The beautiful old chilren's songs which you have heard in the course of this programme are examples of genuinely popular lyrical poetry that have been handed down from generation to generation. During the past century many children's songs were composed by poets of the romantic and late romantic era and set to the music of melodies that were already well known. And they were rapidly absorbed in the general store of popular songs. A number of good children's songs which even today can still be found in all song books, were written by Hoffmann von Fallersleben. One of the most popular of these is probably his riddle canon written in 1843, called "Ein Männlein steht im Walde" ("Little man in the forest").
