" While singing like this, the child hurriedly passes through the arch.」「The Tokugawa Shogunate founded in 1603 established a law that all local daimyo (feudal lords) should leave their wives in Edo, the present Tokyo, as hostages. This was to ensure that the husbands would not revolt against the government. In addition, checkpoints were established on all highways leading to Edo to examine strictly all who passed through - a precaution aimed at preventing the smuggling in of guns and also at preventing the daimyo's wives running away from Edo. Anyone who wanted to pass a checkpoint was required to show a pass, and it was simply impossible to go through without one. People in those days therefore abhored these checkpoints, and their fear naturally made itself felt among children.
