One day he decided to go to the capital to rise in the world. He was getting ready to leave, but a young girl named Okuma who lived in the house opposite to his tried to stop him, weeping hard; so Hanzo gave up his ambition and stayed on in his village. The girl's tears kept on flowing down her cheeks and formed a river, on which they could push a boat all the way down to Osaka, which was then the center of business. The boat soon returned from that city loaded with souvenirs, which Okuma would surely love. They included a lovely small box and a mirror, as well as so many planks. When they built a gate using these planks, and planted cedars around the gate, birds flew towards them lured by the fresh green of the leaves. What kinds of birds are they which we can hear in the trees? Are they wild geese? Or are they crows? If they are crows, we shall go and catch them. Oh, no, they are shirasagi (white herons) which we are forbidden to hunt. So don't you dare to attempt to catch them? The young bride as elegant as a shirasagi, by the way, is such a beauty. She puts rouge on her lips and her teeth are beautifully dyed according to the old custom. She is a very kind-hearted lady, too.
