If there were many seals to be taken a ship might sail away leaving a party to continue their work, and return later. Sometimes the ships foundered in gales and never returned. Sometimes a sealing ship standing off-shore might be caught in a storm and driven on to the rocks. Any number of hazards were in store for the men put ashore on the lonely islands above Antarctica. In 1809 one such party of sealers were stranded on a small island off the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. There were many hazards: storms, treacherous coasts, tough physical work and the ever present risk of fatal accident. One of the most feared of these was that of being castaway. So many ships were lost that many sealers and whalers found themselves abandoned on lonely islands for years on end. Some were never found, and some tried to sail their way back to civilisation and were never seen again. One legendary castaway tale was the story of David Lowston. His ship, a sealer, called ""The Active"", went down in a gale, and he, with a small band of men struggled to a lonely island of the West Coast. The captain tried to sail for New Zealand but his ship also foundered in a gale. The remaining men languished for three years living on rotten seal meat until a ship sighted their bonfires and rescued them.
