Only the most adventurous men would take up the whaling life, footloose and tough they might whale for a season or two then try their luck elsewhere. But once the money was spent it would be back to whaling. Much of the whalers life was spent at tiny remote whaling stations. Here the whalers boiled down blubber, and extracted whalebones. These were parcelled up and sent over to exporting companies like Wellers in Sydney, Australia.」「The Weller brothers were the most successful of the Whaling Companies. In 1831 the brothers made their chief whaling and trading station on the Otago Peninsula in the South Island of New Zealand. In addition to whale oil and bones they traded in timber, dried fish, and tattooed Maori heads that had been smoked and dried. These were prized trophies in Australia and Britain. While settlements slowly and painfully began growing up inland, the whalers sailed from one whaling station to the next. Even before there were any substantial European towns the whalers were sailing far and wide, their frail ships chasing across the last great playground of the Right whale. Company men in London signed on whalers with the cry ""lots of whales off the coast of New Zealand"", and remember New Zealand was fifteen thousand miles away to the south east. What's more the whalemen had to rely on hand harpoons and then tow the whale to the whaling station for the filthy business of tongueing and boiling down blubber. Even the bones and dental plates of the whale were used, for the European ladies had to have trim waists and trim waists meant whalebone corsets.
