This meant years at sea and two crossings of the line (the equator). The line between the hemispheres was fraught with mystery and danger where sailor's stories told of mermaids, and King Neptune. For a young sailor ""crossing the line"" was his coming of age. Old salts were more cynical, and were unsurprised by anything they saw.
