As the forest God, Tanemahuta, was giving up one of his tree children, the prayer had to be chanted properly by a Tohunga or Maori priest. While the tree was being hollowed and shaped it was tapu (sacred) so that the correct implements had to be used carefully, as the voyages of the canoe depended on it.」「THE INVOCATION OPENS[下線付]:」「""The night of death with many chiefs.""」「(The invocation goes on to call upon Tanemahuta, the God of the Forest.)」、台本に「ANNOUNCER (CONT'D)」「The ancient Maoris believed that everything was possessed of life. If a prayer was chanted wrongly then Tane would be angry and the canoe might bring bad luck to its sailors.
